Instant Pot Split Pea Soup

Instant Pot Split Pea Soup

A Childhood Take on Classic Split Pea Soup, Ready to eat in 20 minutes.

Split pea soup has always been one of my favorites. It’s hearty, comforting and packed with flavor. It’s a soup that comes together with a few staples and thanks to the Instant Pot, all you need to do is quickly chop and sauté, then it does the rest. There’s no babysitting here.

Over the years, I’ve perfected my own split pea soup recipe. Back in the day, it took a lot of simmering to get this dish on the table, and time, oh the time! Keep in mind; we had to walk uphill both ways in the snow. Lots of snow in San Diego, har har har.

Now with the modernization of pressure cookers, and the invention of the oh-so-amazing Instant Pot, you can have this soup on your table in almost the same amount of time as heating some of the condensed stuff.

Great, so how do you make it?

The basis of any delicious soup, in my opinion, is a good mirepoix (mir-e-pwaw), aka: carrots, onion and celery. That’s what really gives this soup it’s flavor. It’s a classic french cooking tip, which I picked up from non-other than my fancy cooking husband.

Now, to be honest with you, I had never, ever, ever had hot-dog in my split pea soup. The idea of adding those little franks was never really on the top of my “add to soup list.” But then along came Chrissy Teigen; this girl knows her food. If you don’t already have her book Cravings, I highly recommend it.

Hold the presses! You’re actually suggesting a grown adult should eat hotdogs in their soup?

Yes, I do suggest adults try this hotdog packed soup. Not only do you secretly crave hotdogs, your children openly confess their love for them. So why hold back? It’s deliciousness in a bowl. Mmmhmm. What’s even better is that I make this in the Instant Pot, so between chopping, sautéing and cooking at pressure, you can have this oh-so-good-ness on your table in 20 minutes.

Still not sold on the hotdogs? Not to worry. You can still make my classic split pea soup without it. Be sure to substitute the water with chicken broth, and about 2 cups diced ham for the hotdog. All the other prep and cooking times is the same.

Once you make this soup, you’re going to want it on hand all the time, which is excellent, because, this split pea soup freezes perfectly. Portion it out however you choose, pop it in the freezer, and you too can have perfectly cooked split pea soup whenever your heart desires.

enjoy!

Notes

This recipe DOES NOT translate into a slow cooker recipe. I’ve tried it. Promise, it will be edible, but not something you would eat willingly. Say no to the slow cooker on this one.

Be sure to use a 6QT or larger pressure cooker. Split peas can froth and clog the valves, which could lead to painting your kitchen split pea green.
